UPDATE 27.08.08 - WEEKEND REVIEW

Well the fixtures may have been uninspiring but the weekend's results were more than a little interesting, and could tell us a lot about where this season is heading.

On Saturday, Blackburn could only draw at home to Hull, Liverpool struggled past Boro at home and Villa lost at Stoke. Newcastle beat Bolton 1-0 at home, and Everton won quite easily at West Brom. The most surprising result was perhaps Tottenham's defeat at home to Sunderland, although just two hours later that was surpassed by Arsenal's defeat at Fulham. The Premiership table is already taking shape, and, by our estimations, Tottenham are certs to go down, Arsenal are out of the title race, Hull are destined for Europe, and Liverpool are likely champions...

On Sunday, Chelsea picked up a highly predictable 1-0 win at Wigan. Expect many more of those to follow from them. Man City won easily against 10-man West Ham, putting their recent off-field problems to one side. But for how long? Finally, on Monday, Manchester United got their season up and running with a 1-0 win at Portsmouth. The home side will be wondering where their first point is coming from, with a trip to Everton looming on the horizon.

Nothing can be read from the Pundits Table just yet. The top 30 are separated by just six points, and it will be a few weeks before the table really takes shape. However, last year's champion, Mark Langford, is lurking in 7th place, with runner-up, Alun Price, just behind in 11th. Is a repeat of last season on the cards?!

UPDATE 21.08.08 - WEEKEND PREVIEW

It is a quite uninspiring set of fixtures in the Premiership this weekend. It looks like the fixture computer tried to rid itself of a number of dull matches early in the season.

On Saturday, Blackburn host fifth-placed Hull, Villa take the short trip up the M6 to Stoke, Tottenham play Tottenham Reserves (sorry, Sunderland), West Brom host Everton and Bolton go to Newcastle. The highlight is perhaps Boro's trip to Anfield - that one finished 3-2 to the home team last season and included a fantastic Fernando Torres hat-trick. The late game sees Arsenal go to Fulham, where they generally win by three or four.

On Sunday, the leaders, Chelsea, visit Wigan, a game they always win. Although it was Wigan's point at Stamford Bridge in April that perhaps ended Chelsea's championship hopes. At 4pm, it is Hughes vs Curbishley, the bookies' favourites to win the sack race.

On bank holiday Monday evening, Portsmouth host Manchester United and it is a tough one to call. United's record at Fratton Park is poor, and Portsmouth also denied them the treble last season in their run to the cup. But you'd probably still expect United to come away with three points given current form. Tip carefully, as this one is worth double points!

25th Aug
  Portsmouth 0 1 Manchester United 2

2 This match is worth 2 times normal tip points.
